The omnibus progression, often called a chromatic wedge progression, is identified most immediately by chromatic voices moving in contrary motion. In its familiar C-major presentation, tonic harmony frames a five-sonority dominant expansion; in its broadest usage, related wedge modules continue until the bass has traversed a complete chromatic octave.
That practical definition coexists with a narrower musicological one. Victor Fell Yellin’s minimal cell contains five sonorities organized by symmetrical voice exchange. In broader usage, omnibus or wedge may name the tonic-framed progression, overlapping cells, or the complete octave-spanning chromatic process.
This boundary prevents a common analytical error. A descending chromatic bass, a minor 6/4, or a sequence of dominant sevenths is not sufficient by itself. 2. The tonic frame and Yellin’s minimal five-chord cell
The conventional pedagogical form is C–G7/B–B♭7–Dm/A–B♭7/A♭–G7–C, or in figured-bass shorthand I–V6/5–B♭7–ii6/4–B♭4/2–V7–I. The two C-major chords are a tonal frame, not additional members of the internal five-chord cell. They reveal its large-scale function: an elaboration of dominant space that returns by an authentic G7–C resolution.

In the descending-bass form, the exact succession is G7/B–B♭7–Dm/A–B♭7/A♭–G7. D and F remain fixed. The bass descends B–B♭–A–A♭–G while the soprano ascends G–A♭–A–B♭–B. The moving voices meet on A, cross, and exchange their initial pitch classes. This is the compact contrapuntal identity that the broader chromatic family must not obscure.

The vertical chords are consequences of the exchange, not five unrelated roots. At the midpoint, the two moving voices coincide on A, producing Dm/A with a doubled fifth. The B♭7/A♭ 4/2 is similarly forced by the lines A♭–B♭–D–F. The formula begins with G7/B and ends with root-position G7; reversing it exchanges those boundary functions.
3. Retrograde, dominant prolongation, and local application
The ascending-bass retrograde is G7–B♭7/A♭–Dm/A–B♭7–G7/B. The held D–F axis and literal exchange remain intact. Both orientations can return to C, but their cadential weight differs: the descending cell ends on root-position G7 and supports the conventional V7–I cadence, whereas the retrograde ends on G7/B and offers the bass leading-tone B–C. The tonic is part of the tonal frame rather than a sixth member of the minimal Yellin cell. Separating frame from cell allows the schema to be interrupted, elided, redirected, or prolonged without confusing local chord inventory with complete musical syntax.
4. Extension and the Teufelsmühle A/B cycles
A longer chromatic bass requires one five-chord group to pass into another. In Yellin’s account, chord 5 can become chord 2 of the next group; equivalently, the surface continues as a longer segment of Teufelsmühle B. The resulting eight-chord line is G7/B–B♭7–Dm/A–B♭7/A♭–G7–Bm/F♯–G7/F–E7. Its opening five chords form one complete minimal cell; the whole can be described as overlapping omnibus material in Yellin’s broader practice or as an extended B-type segment under Dittrich’s stricter taxonomy.
The four-chord continuation G7–Bm/F♯–G7/F–E7 holds B and D while the bass descends G–F♯–F–E and the upper chromatic voice rises F–F♯–G–G♯. Versions A and B share each root-position dominant and following minor 6/4. Their third member differs: version A supplies a fully diminished seventh; version B supplies a dominant seventh in 4/2 position. Repeating either three-chord module at descending-minor-third dominant stations produces G7, E7, C♯7, B♭7, and the enharmonic return to G7.

The B cycle may also be traversed upward, but direction does not create a new species: it is the retrograde traversal of the same inventory. Likewise, a composer may combine A and B, omit a member, substitute a consonant chord, or jump into a transposition. Such realizations should be described as variants only after the underlying chromatic bass and voice-leading have been demonstrated.
5. Enharmonic spelling is structural, not cosmetic
The long cycles exploit enharmonic equivalence, yet tonal spelling remains analytically decisive. C♯7 contains C♯–E♯–G♯–B. Its next axial triad is conveniently heard and notated as Fm/C: E♯ becomes F and G♯ becomes A♭. That respelling turns two chord members of C♯7 into the root and third of F minor. The sounding pitch classes have not moved, but their scale-degree meanings have changed.
Keyboard demonstrations usually presume equal-tempered identity. Historical analysis should not silently turn that convenience into a universal claim about intonation: ensemble tuning, temperament, instrumentation, and notation can affect how audible an enharmonic junction is.
The same issue appears at B♭7, which may need to be understood temporarily as A♯7 if the surrounding notation is sharp-oriented. Good notation follows the active voice and destination, not a global preference for sharps or flats. Preserve the chromatic direction when possible; respell at a perceptible harmonic station when the new function becomes clearer than the old one.

6. Historical and musicological context
The musical materials precede the name omnibus. Seidel connected the Teufelsmühle to eighteenth-century practice and older chromatic figures; Telesco traces omnibus-related procedures through Baroque models into Classical-era enharmonic technique. Proposed genealogies include pathopoiia, passacaglia and lament basses, contrary-motion counterpoint, and dominant paraphrase. These are historical and analytical lineages, not proof that every passus duriusculus is an omnibus.
Terminology developed in partially separate scholarly traditions. German-language discussion followed Seidel’s recovery of the Teufelsmühle; Yellin introduced the omnibus in English-language work without consistently separating every related version; Gauldin’s chromatic-wedge theory classifies contrary-motion segments of varying lengths. Dittrich consequently reserves “omnibus” for the exact Yellin formula when it cannot simply be classified as Teufelsmühle. The origin of the word itself is disputed: later accounts associate it with Bernhard Ziehn, while Dittrich reports that its provenance remains unclear.

In later eighteenth- and nineteenth-century repertory, these schemas often accompany uncertainty, melancholy, grief, terror, the sublime, or death. They also occur in fantasies, developments, transitions, and cadenzas where thematic stability is suspended, and as chromatic preparation for a radiant climax. Context shapes perception: a reduced chord inventory is more convincing when formal position, texture, and rhetoric support the schema reading.
7. How to analyze an omnibus passage
Begin horizontally, then classify vertically. A chromatic bass establishes a field of possibilities, not a diagnosis. Reduce the passage to essential voices; identify sustained or reiterated common tones; trace uninterrupted semitone strands; and only then compare the resulting chord inventory with the strict omnibus and Teufelsmühle models.
- Reduce to four voices. Remove doublings, arpeggiation, suspensions, and ornamental tones without destroying registral continuity.
- Trace the chromatic bass. Record direction, omissions, repeated bass notes, and changes of register.
- Locate the stationary dyad. In the strict G model it is D–F; in the following B-type module it changes to B–D.

8. Composition, arranging, and orchestration
To compose a strict omnibus, write the common-tone dyad first. Give it to instruments capable of sustaining or reiterating without obscuring continuity: inner strings, horns, organ manuals, synth pads, or held piano tones with careful pedaling. Assign the exchange to registrally distinct parts. For a longer Teufelsmühle cycle, reassign the common-tone dyad at every dominant station rather than pretending one pair remains fixed through all twelve bass degrees.
Rhythm controls whether the schema is heard as process or event. Equal half notes reveal the mechanism. A long dominant at each station with faster intervening chords makes the large-scale minor-third cycle audible. Unequal durations can conceal the pattern inside a phrase, while suspensions and appoggiaturas can enrich the surface without changing the reduction.

In jazz or popular arranging, extensions may be added above the structural four voices, but the defining strands should not be buried. A G13 or G7♭9 can participate if B, F, and the moving parts remain legible. Guitarists can reduce the texture to bass plus two common tones plus one moving upper note; pianists can divide the chromatic lines between outer fingers and sustain the axis in the middle.
9. Practice and ear training
Practice classification as well as execution. Sing the canonical descending bass while playing its ascending exchange, then reverse the roles. Add D–F only after both chromatic strands can be followed independently. Finally compare the A and B link chords by ear so that “omnibus” does not become a label for every chromatic dominant sequence.
- Play C, then G7/B, and establish the held D–F dyad.
- Descend B–B♭–A–A♭–G in the bass while ascending G–A♭–A–B♭–B above it.
- Name omnibus members 1–5 without interrupting either strand.
- Resolve the final root-position G7 to C and hear the complete tonic frame.

- Transpose the minimal cell and both three-member Teufelsmühle modules.
- Analyze a repertorial passage and state both the sounding schema and the terminology being used: strict cell, broad wedge, A, B, mixed, shortened, or analogous.
