Rhythm workshop

Create a circular rhythm

Design a circular rhythm from layered rings, steps, hits, rotations, velocity, and probability.

Quick guide

Create your first circular rhythm

Build a rhythm one layer at a time. Start with a simple pulse, add complementary rings, then experiment with accents, rotations and subdivisions to create evolving rhythmic patterns.

Learning tips

Start simple

Strong grooves are usually built from a few clear rhythmic ideas. Begin with one repeating pulse before adding complexity.

Build the foundation

  • Create one ring with a steady pulse.
  • Choose an appropriate number of steps.
  • Decide how many hits the ring should contain.
  • Listen before adding another layer.

Add rhythmic movement

  • Use Euclidean Fill as a starting point.
  • Experiment with Random Fill for inspiration.
  • Rotate rings instead of rewriting them.
  • Mix rings with different numbers of hits.

Refine your groove

  • Adjust velocity and probability.
  • Compare different step counts.
  • Keep one layer simple while another evolves.
  • Save several versions to compare ideas.

Exercise

Create a groove using only two rings. Build one steady pulse and one complementary rhythm. Listen for one minute, then change only the rotation of one ring and observe how the groove evolves without changing the pulse.
