Learning tips

Build your harmonic ear

Listen before you analyse

Play an example once without looking at its formula. Then listen again while identifying the root, third, fifth, extensions, and altered notes.

Compare small changes

Choose related structures such as C7, C7(no5), C7♯5, and C7♯11. Notice how changing or removing a single degree transforms the chord while part of its identity remains.

Practise effectively

  • Study one chord or scale family at a time.
  • Compare several examples with the same root.
  • Alternate between block playback and arpeggio playback.
  • Try the same structure with several voicing presets.
  • Use scale runners to turn theoretical notes into playable melodic material.
  • Repeat the exercise in several keys.

Try this exercise

Start with C7. Compare the complete chord with C7(no1), C7(no3), C7(no5), and C7(no7). Identify which omitted note changes the chord’s identity most strongly, then repeat the comparison with a different root.
